Facing a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. At the Trinity Health Richard J. Lacks Sr. Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, we believe every patient deserves confidence in their care. One of the most powerful steps you can take is seeking a second opinion. It’s not about questioning your current doctor – it’s about ensuring your treatment plan is the right one for you.
A second opinion connects you with board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians within the Cancer Network of West Michigan. This collaborative approach ensures your care is personalized, evidence-based and supported by the latest advancements in cancer treatment.
Holistic care that sees the whole you
A second opinion isn’t only about confirming a diagnosis. It’s an opportunity to explore care that supports your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. At Lacks Cancer Center, we provide cancer care for you, not just for your condition.
Jamie Caughran, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained breast surgeon and medical director for surgical oncology at Lacks Cancer Center, explains:
“When I meet with second opinion patients, I try to uncover what they are hoping to gain from the experience and make sure we direct our interactions and their care with those goals in mind. Sometimes it’s about confirming decisions, sometimes it’s about finding a better interpersonal fit. All these reasons are valid and worthwhile.”
Confidence through collaboration
Cancer is complex. Your care shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. A second opinion at Lacks Cancer Center means more minds, options, and peace of mind. Our multidisciplinary team (including oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, nutritionists, and psychological support specialists) works together to review every detail of your case.
Dr. Caughran emphasizes the importance of this process. “We re-review all outside pathology and imaging studies to assure our recommendations align with the known diagnosis. Rarely, we find differences. But, if that occurs, it can significantly impact therapy choices.”
Don’t settle for one perspective
Studies show that second opinions can lead to changes in diagnosis or treatment. In fact, research suggests many patients want second opinions but feel uncomfortable asking for them.
Dr. Caughran encourages patients to speak up. “Oncologists should encourage second opinions. We want patients 100% confident in their treatment plan. Seeking out more information does not offend anyone. These are critical life decisions,” she says.
At Lacks Cancer Center, we make the process simple and timely. Our guidelines ensure second opinion consults happen quickly so your care isn’t delayed.
Second opinions can lead to new options
A second opinion can open doors to advanced treatments, clinical trials and innovative technologies such as robotic-assisted surgery and precision radiation therapies. It can also help you weigh factors you may not have considered, such as long-term side effects, distance from home or dosing strategies.
“Discussing the pros and cons of decisions in a treatment plan may bring up factors the patient hadn’t previously considered. Having a high-volume breast-only practice for over 17 years allows me to reflect on what might be an issue ten years from now, not just a month from now,” explains Dr. Caughran.
